Community Media: Now More Than Ever

Alan Bushong - Capital Community Television, Salem Oregon

Unemployment figures are skyrocketing. People need jobs. Businesses are cutting back; too many small businesses and large corporations are closing their doors. Homeowners are struggling with mortgages. Health insurance costs are rising beyond the means of employers and individuals. Home sales are at 30-year lows. Experts say the worst is yet to come.

Local governments and non-profit organizations are hurting for funds, right when their services are needed the most. Schools are struggling to meet the rising demands of No Child Left Behind as their budgets fall. As everyone struggles with growing demand and smaller budgets, communications staffs are often the first to go, right when the need is the greatest.

All across America we need community media, now more than ever. Community media centers put their communities on TV and often beyond, providing channels, training and tools of production. Across our country, community media centers:

         •  connect the community with government, providing C-SPAN style, gavel-to-gavel coverage of meetings
         •  connect the community with the work of local schools through instructional programs and performances
         •  connect local non-profit organizations with those in need and those they serve
         •   train individuals in the skills necessary to use electronic media, connecting neighbors, friends and total strangers

Hurricane Katrina showed again how the American people pull together in difficult times. Our challenges will take all of us working together, and to work together we need connection and community. We need community media in all communities, connecting people who have worked together for 30 years and people who need to work together the next 30.

Thank You

A big thank you to all who contacted their Representatives to ask support and co-sponsorship of the Community Access Preservation (CAP) Act of 2009 (H.R. 3745). As a result of your efforts, Rep. Steve Driehaus has signed on as a co-sponsor. There are currently 15 co-sponsors of the bill. We are hoping for some movement on the legislation in the near future.

Volunteer Spotlight

Kudos go to our outstanding Volunteers who created the OHSAA District Swim Finals Videos in February.

Dana Gagnon, Caitlin Gagnon, Jonathan Palmer, Jason Dudley and Alex Bergquist went the distance and then some.

OHSAA District Swim Finals were held at Miami U’s Corwin Nixon Natatorium so there was a long distance drive to the events and back.

Dana, Caitlin, Jason, and JP were all available to go above and beyond by helping set-up equipment and crewing all four shoots on both Saturday and Sunday working from early morning till after 9:00 PM at night with only a break for lunch.

A special thank you to JP for going up with Tony on Thursday to pull cables and do preliminary set-up for the announcers.

The several announcers who worked the shoots included Randy Reynolds, Nancy Tsvitse, Marty Hubbell, Mike Andrews, Jamie Reynolds, Jenny Kemp, and Val Lyons. Our thanks goes out to these voices for the Finals.

Be sure to thank and congratulate all the crew for creating such quality programming for us.
